What Dog Sellers Need to Know & Do

Everyone needs a companion -- whether it's a friend, family member or lover. As they say, 'no man is an island.'

In my case, I prefer having a dog. Why? It's because they are loyal and do not demand much from you except to feed and give them a loving home. I've always had pets throughout my childhood and have already had some of my own. Every time I watch a movie about a dog, my heart always softens up and makes me tear up. To say, at the very least, the movie Hachiko (A Dog's Story) is my favorite movie of all time.

Even though I've watched it several times, I never fail to cry (no, I do not tear up. I CRY.) I remember the first time I watched that movie, I was alone in our house in Paranaque with my toy poodle named Ponti. When I got to the climax, I kept crying and crying for 30 minutes straight. Then I hugged my dog tightly. Other dog movies that made me cry are Marley and Me, Homeward Bound, Air Bud, Beethoven, and Eight Below. I am a bottle of tears whenever I watch dog movies.

Well, this post isn't about dog movies. It's actually about buying a new pet.

Recently, I've been feeling low and depressed in my condo. Even though I really like being on my own, there are some instances when I just wished I had someone who made me laugh and giddy inside. But yet, I am deathly terrified of committing myself to another relationship that will only end up badly. Instead of having a boyfriend, I prefer getting a dog.

While I am still deciding if I should have Ponti shipped back here (from Bacolod), I am also considering buying a new one, preferably a Yorkshire terrier. So now, I'm frequenting websites like Sulit. There are several sellers who I have found interesting. At the same time, there are so many sellers who I find insulting-- not because of their own personalities, but because they are trying to make money out of the craziest things. There are even some who irritate me so much because they think their potential buyers are so stupid.

One reason why it's so hard for me to find a dog here in Manila is because a) Sellers can claim their dog is a pure breed, b)They can show fake PCCI papers, c) The dog they are selling is abnormal (in the sense that some body parts are missing-- yes, oh yes. My dog Ponti is a one-egg wonder. He can't have kids). I'm really having a difficult time looking for a dog to buy because of these reasons. There's even one seller who offered to swap his female Yorkie with my iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS and +P5,000= CRAZY!

Ponti & I became best friends right away
This photo was taken the first night he arrived in my life!

I do hope I find a real dog breeder though so I can be really sure of the quality of the dog. I am really so appalled by the way these sellers do business that I decided to post some things that they need to know. At the same time, I hope this also helps those who are planning to buy a dog:

1. Mixed Breeds

I was talking to my friend, Angel the other day about looking for a dog when we both agreed on something really crazy: selling mixed breed puppies at an expensive price. In the first place, they should never be sold at a price! These dogs are considered abnormal because they won't have the same features and attitudes as their parents. I know there are some that look good but still... a mixed breed does not have its own heritage. If you buy a mixed breed dog, you won't know what his normal attitude will be like. If you must sell it, then at least sell it at a price that's just enough to cover the expenses you spent on him (vaccination, birthing and food).

For sellers, don't sell your mixed breed dogs for what the pure ones are worth.

2. Photos

I came across a dog seller a few months ago who was getting a lot of bad feedback on his comments list. It was because the picture he posted was really dark-- the only thing you could see were the eyes of his dog. He even said "please respect my pictures." In the first place, please post a better quality of the photo of the dog you are selling. As buyers, we are not requesting you to provide a photo of your dog that has been captured by the best photographer in the world. Even if you took the photo of your dog using your phone's camera, we won't criticize it. Just make sure that your dog is clearly visible in it.

3. Papers

If you're selling a mixed breed dog and you're saying he has PCCI papers, then that's BULLSH*T. If you're a real breeder, you know that mixed breed dogs can't have papers! 'Nuff said.

Oh! And when we ask if your dog has papers, don't tell us that you lost it or you don't have it yet. The reply we're looking for is either yes or no.

4. Vaccination Shots

I came across a seller who was selling me his 2 year old shih tzu for P7,000. When I asked if she had complete shots and papers, she told me that her dog only had 2 out of 5 shots and that the papers are missing. To all dog sellers: if you're going to sell your dog, make sure that you complete his vaccination and deworming shots before you give them away. As a rule, puppies can only be given to their new owner when they have reached 3 months and above.

5. Price

For price, it's the same as the rule for selling mixed breeds with the same price as pure breeds. Also, your adult dog is not the same as a puppy. Do not sell them with the same price unless your dog has been trained or has achieved awards.

6. Quality

To be honest, when I am looking for a dog, I don't take time to read the names of his ancestors. For one, I am never sure if they are real or if the seller just copied them from another source. Also, I don't know who the "big shot/ champion" lines are so this is not really a priority for me. As long as I'm sure that the dog is a pure breed and is healthy, I am perfectly fine with it.

Because of my fascination for dogs when I was young, I kept looking at the encyclopedia and reading about the different breeds of dogs. To some extent, I can still look at a dog and determine if he or she is a pure breed or not.

From Eastwood to Mall of Asia, Fazoli’s and Archery

Now that my Japanese friend is back in Manila to pursue his dream of working in the country, I got all excited because I couldn’t wait to show him around town. As much as I loved my girlfriends, I couldn’t be with them all of the time because of different reasons: 1) no money, 2)no time, 3)both. So when I invited them last time for an impromptu trip to Fazoli’s Eastwood on a Sunday, I was so shocked that they agreed.

I don’t know what it is but I really like spending time in Eastwood. If I were given a chance, I’d love to stay there for a few months because it really feels like home. Every time I go to Eastwood, it really makes me feel like my house is just a few blocks away. So every chance I get, I take the opportunity to go to Eastwood. Unfortunately, I am only able to do this once a year.

Now that my car is back, I took this opportunity to go to a road trip to Eastwood—on a Sunday because that’s the only time of the week where there isn’t much traffic.

When we got to Fazoli’s, I was extremely excited to eat their complimentary Garlic Bread. Not that I don’t like Fazoli’s, it’s just that the food there is commercialized and nothing really special. What really attracts me to this restaurant is the memories that I had with my friends and family members eating with me there. Plus, I enjoy having the liberty to refill my cup with any drink I want.

My order... Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish it...
Yep, that's a hungry Japanese boy's order
After Fazoli’s, we took some time to stroll around the mall and look at the clothes being sold. This reminded me of another reason why I wanted to live in Eastwood—they allowed dogs everywhere! Now I’m missing Ponti

Ponti at 5 months old...
When we finished, I wanted to get back to Makati so I could work. But knowing that this was Sam’s last day in Manila, I couldn’t help but take advantage of it. Plus, it was a Sunday so I think my body knew I needed the rest. So I invited them to play archery with me.

So from Eastwood, we hurried to Mall of Asia so we could play in Gandiva Archery. It wasn’t my first time playing archery. In fact, it was the second. So when Ryo challenged me to the game, I was all up for it. Considering the fact that it has been a year since I last played archery, I was all up for the challenge because Sam and Ryo have never played archery.

Choosing my bow...
I am no expert with this sport but I wish I knew how to play better. All I remember is that they will put an arm band support on your left arm so that you don’t hurt yourself and it will support the weight of the bow. On your right hand, you will be putting a small belt for your two fingers. This is for the string of the bow. Also, you will wear a belt on your waist where you will be placing your arrows for easy access.

You won't have to strike a similar pose though...
To play, you just have to attach the arrow on the string of the bow using the head that are attached to it. You will then have to close your left eye and avoid tilting your head. Your right arm should be folded straight across your chest and your two fingers are the only ones that are holding the string. With your eye on the target, release the string and it will launch the arrow.

Sam displays how to play archery
It’s really easy to play archery. The good thing about playing at Gandiva is they charge P500 for one hour. You can split the amount and divide it into 2 people so that means it’s P250, 30 minutes per person. You also have to pay P20 for a new target sheet. If you want to learn how to play archery, you can join the class they offer for P5,000. This class consists of 10 sessions, 1 hour each. You will then be able to play archery from scratch. This is a good idea if you want to learn how to play archery really well. But if you’re just like me who wants to try it out, just go with the P500 option. For both options, all the materials are already included in the rate.

Oh, I lost to Sam and Ryo. Turns out, I need more practice. Hmph, I call it beginner’s luck.

Archery is fun!

Gandiva Sports is located at Level 1, South Wing, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay Road. For inquiries: call (02)556.51.73.

Ponti's Antics: High Five Me!

I was very shocked to know that Ponti still knows how to give me a high five. After 3 months of not seeing him, I was very happy to know he still remembers the trick. Check out this video :)

Greetings from Bacolod!

Hey guys! I'm sending you all my holiday greetings from my hometown, Bacolod City. Sorry if I haven't blogged for a while, I've been busy with work + deadlines and settling in. I promise when I've got content, I'll post them right away!

But for now, here's a Christmas photo of me and my dog :)

November 3, 2010

Happy Birthday Ponti!!!

I am posting this because today is the first birthday of my dog, Ponti. I miss him very much and I can't wait to go home to Bacolod for Christmas to see him once again. I might take him back home with me when I leave for Manila but I'm still deciding on this because I will need to move into a condo which allows pets.

Anyway, I was at Bonifacio High Street with my sister and her (soon-to-be) fiance's family last weekend. As always, BHS is full of dogs. This time though, we saw a bunch of Huskies and their owners grouped together. I saw a number of them who I wanted to hug and take home with me! But of course, I couldn't. So instead, I took their pictures.

I think her name is Phoebe (?) and she is less than a year old
When I turned around, there was another group in the distance. Shih-Tzu and their owners. There were some Lhasa Apsos there too. But I was more attracted to the Huskies because they are so cute!!!

Happy Birthday Ponti!!

Ponti's Antics

I miss Ponti, my black Toy Poodle. I gave him to my little brother last month so that they could take care of him. Since I had plans of moving, I decided to give my dog to my brother so that I wouldn't have to worry about where I will be putting him when time came for me to move.

With all of the pets I had, Ponti is the one who was closest to me. He is the sweetest dog anyone can have. I would remember waking up with him sleeping on my pillow, waiting for me to wake up so I could take him outside and pee. He is really well behaved and amazing until the time I got pneumonia so I  had to place him in a cage. =(

During one of our lazy days in February, Ponti shocked me by humping my leg. It was the first time a dog ever did that to me and I found it pretty hilarious! I took a video of him doing that.

My New Babies...

Because I miss Ponti so much, I decided to buy a pair of rabbits to take care of. ^,^

I named the boy Bruno and the girl is called Matilda. I am still adjusting to having a pet that does not bark and just eats all day :)

Bruno

Matilda
I like my new pets a lot since they are so cute! Just got angry today though because the kids of our next door neighbor threw a piece of paper, an aquarium plant accessory, and a piece of red hot chili into my new pets' cage. I got so irritated by this.

>Sigh< Why are there some parents who can't teach their kids not to mess with other people's belongings?!?????

July 15, 2010: No Pay + No Electricity = :,(

So there’s still no electricity at home. Boohoo. I end up with no pay for the magazine but at least I was able to get the money from my other gig. [Salamat!] Paid the bills… Globe and HSBC. Still have pending balance for my other card though but with the amount of work I have left, they should be enough.

With no electricity YET, I decided to spend the evening at Greenbelt with my friend, Angel. Sadly, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf did not have internet connection too! So I was stuck editing photos and did some grocery instead.

When Angel and I met up, we decided to eat dinner at Yellow Cab. We got the Pepperoni and Mushroom 10” pizza and waited for Martin and his friend Mark to show up. Out of the 10” pizza, Angel and I were only able to eat 2 slices each. So the remaining 4, she had to take home.

After a while, Martin and Mark showed up. We chatted for a bit and talked about a particular scenario that just occurred during the day. Private info though as he might be reading this…. [Who’s the stalker now?] ^,^

Martin looks scary here...

We then went to Red Mango to get our (Angel & I) addiction remedy: YOGURT! Seriously, Angel and I loves yogurt so much there was one time we ate a serving every other day! And of course, that meant we ended up broke for the next few weeks. Lately though, I’ve been MIA (missing in action, mind you) since my birthday. And I told her that I would be saving money from our yogurt trips. Last night was an exception though since there was still no electricity at home.

Martin and his huge order, Me, Angel

I got the small Original yogurt topped with grapes and crushed Graham crackers. It was so good!!! =) Angel got small Green Tea yogurt and topped it with motchi while Martin got large [?] Green Tea yogurt. We took pictures and the two boys talked about Toy porn, Katrina Halili, and what-nots. While Angel and I chatted about make-up, work, and our pets: Ponti and Motchi.

Eat Batman Eat!

We’re going to watch Inception later.. I can’t wait!

Lola Basyang's Aftermath: July 14, 2010

I wasn't able to blog yesterday due to 'Lola Basyang.' So this blog will be about the recent storm (typhoon?) that had just hit our country..

Don't get me wrong. It's not that I like calamities or experiencing another system blackout + no water supply. But there's something about the aftermath of a storm that makes me feel a little bit better about the whole calamity.

Tuesday night, I had the worst time falling asleep since the electricity went out at our house 12am while I was sending my report to SPARK. I was initially planning to sleep early since I had a full schedule the next day (a photo shoot at 9am + work + go to office + Louis Vuitton event at 7pm). But Basyang would not let me. The wind was so strong, it was frightening. I could hear tin rooftops passing outside my window and was worried it might hit our car. I also had this fear that the rain would be so strong, our roof would collapse and water would come gushing in. Plus, it did not help that Ponti was barking like crazy. I decided to let him in my room.

Ponti kept looking out the window

But I couldn't sleep. Apparently, the hallowing wind and the effects of the storm had a different effect on my Toy Poodle. He kept walking around on my bed, tearing apart my pillow, and barking. So I decided to let him out.

I was finally able to sleep at 2. When I awoke, everything was quiet. There was still no electricity and we found out the water supply in our little subdivision was also affected. I took a peek outside our door and everything was a mess. The clouds were still a bit dark, indicating that the storm was about to leave. I had to hurry though, as I was going to be late for the shoot.

We left the house 7 am and arrived 10 minutes later in Makati City. On a normal Wednesday, the ride would have taken us at least 45 minutes. I was early for the shoot so my sister and I decided to eat at McDonald's Valero. Just before 8am, I got a text from our Creative Director that the shoot was postponed to an indefinite date. I didn't know what else I could do since there was no electricity in the office (SVT). My sister and I decided to go to Glorietta.

We ate at Krispy Kreme so we could surf the internet for a few minutes. During lunchtime, she took me to Rustan's for a makeover by Bea/ Ms. B. of Bobbi Brown. And later, we decided to go home.

There was really no electricity yesterday and everywhere was a mess. Trees had fallen, leaves scattered, electric lines tangled together. Even in Makati, generators were operating non stop through all the biggest buildings. I was unable to work and do any blog. Needless to say, all my plans were disrupted.

There's something about aftermaths that make me feel gratified. I know that there are a lot who don't share the same emotion with me but it's really during this time that I feel thankful nothing bad happened to me and my loved ones. When I awoke yesterday, I made sure to text everyone I loved: friends and family, to check if they were also okay. It's during a storm's aftermath that everybody realizes they have to go back to their roots and not to depend on too much electricity. The network was down in our house too so it really felt like I was experiencing another storm back in our province during my childhood years.

I remember last year, I made a short video for Ondoy. We should all be thankful we're okay. Now let's move on...

Goodbye Suki

Suki at 2 months old
Everyone who knows me knows I am such a big dog lover. And for them, it's no surprise that I took home a new dog the moment I laid my eyes on her. This happened last August 2009. I was planning to buy a dog so that I could have a pet of my own once again. One moment I was in the office, telling my sister that I would go to a place to check out a dog. But when I returned, I was already carrying a Labrador puppy. I named her Suki, after Anna Paquin in True Blood.

Suki at 3 months old
I love Suki. I would even take her with me when I went to QC one day. She would wear diapers so that she wouldn't make a mess. Aside from that, she even came along to an out of town trip in Laguna.

Sadly though, just a month after I bought her, she grew bigger immediately. Maybe it was because of the food that I was giving her and she was healthy. Maybe it was because I was too busy on other things that I didn't notice my dog growing so big.

What I did notice though was she was so playful. This is why I got her trained at Aszook9. It was two months worth of training but still, Suki was too playful for me. I couldn't even give her a bath anymore 'cause she always knocks the wind out of me. Also, I felt really sorry for always locking her up in her cage. I can't let her out 'cause she keeps on jumping on everyone.

Suki at 5 months old
This is why I decided to sell her or have her adopted.

I posted it on Sulit.com.ph and I got tons of inquiries right away. I even had offers to swap Suki for a Lhasa Apso, Nokia Cellphone, Mp3 players, Hedgehog, Mynah Bird and a lot more. But what really caught my attention was this guy who wanted to swap Suki for a Miniature Poodle. He said he's going to use Suki for Autistic kids.

Last night, I officially said my goodbye to Suki. And though she looked at me with her puppy eyes looking like she was sad, a part of me felt free. Even though it was a sad event, Suki would be happier with them. She would have lots of time to play not compared with me that she's always locked up. I feel guilty about locking her up but it's for her own good.

Suki and her new owner rode a bus to Tarlac and a rented van to Baguio last night. I just got word that they have arrived in Baguio and that Suki was behaving well. I'm happy for Suki. It just saddens me that there are no longer puppy eyes staring at me whenever I take a peek in her cage when I arrive home in the wee hours of the day.
