Pamilya Grill: A Fake Bob's for People on a Budget

When I came home last December 14, I immediately asked all my closest friends to take me to the new restaurants in Bacolod. Of course, I was very excited to try each of these restaurants because I'm sure they will all give me quite an experience. So when I asked them what the new restaurants in Bacolod are, most of them told me about "Fake Bob's."

Apparently, there's this very small restaurant along the highway of Eroreco Subdivision which offers delicious Sate Babi, Baby Back Ribs, and Fruit Punch. They said that the cook/owner of this establishment used to be the cook/chef of Bob's and decided to open his own restaurant after he retired from the famous Bacolod restaurant. The only thing that was different was that this new restaurant was cheaper!

So, on a mission to scour this new establishment, I hurried and invited my 2 favorite cousins: Ann and Joy. We went there last Dec. 31, 2010 to try what everyone has been raving about. I already told my cousins about this Fake Bob's restaurant that I've been trying to check out so they were eager to join me.

When we got there, we found out that the name was Pamilya Grill. Since Ann already knew what she wanted to eat (Baby Back Ribs) and I wanted to check their Sate Babi, we ordered those right away. However, since the menu was limited, I told Joy she could order another Baby Backribs dish and we will just split it. I also ordered Fruit Punch for each of us since it was what I usually order in the real Bob's.

The first order that arrived was the Fruit Punch, a watermelon punch that contain bits of pineapple, watermelon balls, and buko. Priced at only P20 a glass, it was quite a treat! But compared to the order Bob's served, the serving was obviously smaller. The taste was exactly the same except that the one from Pamilya Grill only had a few slices of fruit. I think 2 orders of this will equal 1 serving of Bob's Fruit Punch.

The next to arrive was the Sate Babi. For those who don't know what this dish is, it is actually pork barbecue which has been smothered in a rich and creamy serving of peanut butter sauce. This has long been the bestseller in Bob's.

Pamilya Grill's version was slightly similar. Each order came with 2 sticks of pork barbecue lightly dressed in the famous satay sauce and a serving of java rice. Their dish did not have atchara on the side plus I found that they did not entirely coat the barbecue with the sauce. So I had to order an extra serving of the sauce to perfect the taste of Sate Babi.

Lastly, we got to try their Medium sized Baby Back Ribs. We originally wanted to get the small size (P75) because we knew we couldn't finish the whole thing. But since they did not have the small anymore, we got the medium (P90). They also had large (P120) and extra large (P150).

I was a bit disappointed with this dish though. Even though I liked the fact that it was very soft and easy to chew, I did not like getting about 2 inches full of fat. I like to eat fat but if it's this much serving, it makes me want to throw up. But since it was on my table already, I decided to just eat it. I've tried a much better Baby Back Ribs dish here in Bacolod.

Overall, I would say my experience was a pleasant one. I got to eat three Bob's bestseller dishes without burning a hole in my pocket. I think I'll return to this establishment to order the Spareribs next time. But if I want to eat the original, I know where to go. ^,^

There were a lot of people who asked me whether or not Bob's will sue this establishment. To this, I say Bob's does not have any grounds for suing Pamilya Grill for these reasons:
  • There has been no direct copying of the trademark, logo, or name of Bob's. Pamilya Grill is really called Pamilya Grill. The name "Fake Bob's" has been given by people who have tried the restaurant.
  • Unless the recipes have been patented, Bob's cannot claim full rights to these recipes. Anyone can try making Sate Babi, Baby Back Ribs, and Fruit Punch without knowing the real recipe. And through trial and error + lots of research, they will eventually get close or even perfect the recipe of this restaurant.
Let's just say Pamilya Grill is the Bob's for the masses. Since Bob's today has become a real treat, Pamilya Grill has just given an option for those who are on a tight budget.

When we ate there, a lot of people kept arriving to pick up their orders. If you want to eat Sate Babi or Back Ribs at home, you can simply call (034) 433 7184 to order ahead. Pamilya Grill is located along the main highway of Eroreco Subd. It is near the turn to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital. They are open from 10:00am until 9:00pm.

2010 Year End Credit

Today is the start of another day, another year. Let it be filled with lots of beautiful memories like the ones I shared with my friends and relatives. I pray that 2011 will give us all a good year and nothing too tragic...

And just like my 2009 Year End Credit last year, I opted to skip out on the New Year's Resolution and instead focused on a 2010 Year End Credit...

This year though, I decided to make things a little different. Instead of last year's normal list of people I thanked for sticking with me, I decided to give out online Thank You Coupons. These coupons are reedeemable throughout 2011 and are good for single use only.

I decided to give out coupons because my blog is now centered around food. And like I always mention, food is more than eating.. Rather, it is a memory filled with good years and laughter with a specific person. Because even the food is not that great, our minds play tricks on us into thinking they are very delicious. But in truth, it was our memory with that person that led us to believe a second serving would be anything like the first. We believe the second serving will bring us back to the time we were with that special person, even for just a split second.

So without further ado, here are the receipients of this year's Thank You Coupons and where they are for:

Jesna Lem, Jenniferlyn Ruego, Hannah Barreta- Mami's (P500 worth)

Girls, whenever I go home, you never fail to meet me and make sure I am alright. In 2010, we went on one adventure and I wish we could always do that. I hope that this year, we'll be able to have another out of town trip-- one that will be worth the crazy adventure we always share. Thanks for being my friends :)

Liza Ann and Elaine Joyce Fuentebella- [open coupon applicable four 4-5 people] (P1000 worth)

To the two of my favorite cousins in the whole world: Thanks for the fun times we always share. Even though the three of us are literally separated from one another, we all manage to meet when we return home. Like the C.E.L. group we have established when we were still kids, I hope we always remain this close and never change. I miss the fun we used to share in our Sum-ag compound. And every time I'm in Bacolod, I'm always reminded of our younger years. I always wish we could spend more time together because a single night is simply not enough. :(

Tricia and Jake Monfort- Mongolian Buffet in Bob's (P500)

Umm... Jake's too young to enjoy this feast so instead, let's wait till he's got an appetite as big as ours. :)

Although we've had our ups and downs, we still manage to stay friends. People have tried to ruin our friendship (lots of times) but we have been able to stay close friends. I hope our bond won't end and we'll continue to be friends. Sometimes, I miss our high school days but when I think about all the petty fights we've had, I stop and smile because I know we're a lot better now. I can still remember Andie sitting the whole barkada in a circle during lunch so that we could settle our indifferences. :) I miss you Trish and hope we could keep each other updated, no matter the distance.

Mimi Valencia and Cristel Segovia- Korean restaurant (P500 worth)

I love eating in Korean restaurants and every time I do, I always remember Mimi and Cristel. These two girls have been my long time best friends and they are always with me no matter what. We have been through hell and several misunderstandings, but our friendship continues to live on. Just like the many Korean tutor-student relationships that have a time limit, my time with these two girls are about to end (as I leave for Manila on the 11th) but our memories these past few weeks have been an addition to the many Christmases that we have spent together. May our friendship last us 50 more years :)

Our differences make us all unique from one another. I believe that and I've got the best 3 girl friends with me to prove it. Our friendship is the perfect explanation of how different personalities best match each other. But despite our indifferences, we still manage to get along and have the best time in Manila. I look forward to seeing you girls again when I return home (although I'll be seeing Chris tomorrow). May we continue to share a great 2011 together. Thanks for the friendship and all the head whacks when I get myself into trouble. :) You girls are the best! And like Mimi, Cristel and Trish, I love you girls! :) I know for sure that without you by my side, Manila won't be as much fun this past 3 years.

Bob's Makati: Opens Closer To Where All The Action Is

Since 1965, indeed
Just when I thought I'll be having trouble getting to Paseo de Magallanes, Bob's Manila decides to open a branch in Dela Rosa St. corner Gil St.! Now, I can just head on over to Bob's Makati whenever I feel like eating my favorite dish from home-- Sate Babi.

The new branch is bigger and has a reminiscent of the original Bob's Lacson. When I first entered, the new establishment reminded me of 21 Bar and Restaurant, back when it was still Bar 21.

The original menu printed as a table mat
You can see prices as low as P1.40 for a cheeseburger!
This new branch, filled with brighter lights, second floor capacity, and more cake choices has invaded the CBD! Just a few blocks from the busiest streets of the metro, Bob's is located at Dela Rosa St. corner Gil St. For those who don't know where that is, it's very near The Enterprise Tower and a block from Paseo de Roxas.

When you're in Bob's, make sure you order Sate Babi (pronounced Sa-te Ba-bi). It's grilled pork barbecue slathered with peanut satay sauce who's recipe has been in the family for decades! I even attempted to make the sauce on my own and failed. It was close--but Bob's was definitely better!

Other choices you should not miss include their Baby Back Ribs, Bob's Burger, and Tenderloin Steak. My sister ordered the half tenderloin steak and this is what she came up with.

Even though we were on a diet, we simply could not resist the tempting cakes on display. For dessert, we decided to split a Moist Chocolate Cake, which only costed P60. The only comment I had with the cake was it was a bit dry. Or maybe I'm just used to the cake which I order from another establishment. ^,^

Don't forget to order their famous Fruit Punch!

Now, Makati residents can have their business lunches and meetings in Bob's! Great job to the Magalonas!

The Best Eats in Bacolod

Since Masskara 2010 just ended, I reposted my list of the best eats in Bacolod. I compiled this list a year after I moved to Manila. I had to save my time before I could upload it because I did not have pictures yet. If you only know about the infamous Inasal, you have not truly experienced the best of Bacolod. Why? Read on below...

It may be because I practically lived in Bacolod my whole life but for me it's still the best place to grow up in. Being in Manila for nearly a year now has been a roller coaster ride filled with joyful moments, depressing memories and of course new adventures lurking just behi nd every corner. Nothing compares to the thrill of living in Manila and all of the endless possibilities that life can offer. Well.. that is.. almost nothing. Only if there were still s ome more to add to this almost perfect city.

Here is a list of the things in Bacolod that I crave for the most. If they may be already here in the city, I haven't encountered them yet and would like to do so. If only they were here, then Manila would feel just like home:

1. Bob's Bulalo Steak and Sate Babi-Imagine your ordinary bulalo soup but this time on a sizzling plate. Hot and so tender. Yummy... For the Sate Babi, pork barbecue topped with Peanut Butter sauce. Bob's specialty since 1940s.

2. Ericka's Cup's Very Berry Sundae (too bad they closed already)- definitely very berry. Vanilla and Strawberry sundae topped with Blueberries, Strawberries and Raspberries.. A sinful delight in every spoon! Better than sex. Hehehe. (You know the saying that Chocolate and Ice Cream are two items that we can all live without but we simply just can't resist? And that those two delightful desserts are comparative to sex in that way?)

3. Pepe's Dynamite Sticks- oozing with mozarella cheese with a touch of spice. Bursts in your mouth! A perfect appetizer or pulutan!

4. Kaisei's Chicken Teppan, Unagi Terriyaki, Sukiyaki- imagine the taste of Manila's Tempura Restaurant with the same price range but with the perfect high class ambiance... This is Kaisei. Everyone's favorite Japanese restaurant in Bacolod.

5. Gypsy Tea Room's Garlic Cheese Dip, Smoked Cheese Dip, Chocolate Fondue, Raspberry Tea Shake, Negros Coffee- looking for a place to chillout with the company of friends? Gypsy's is the perfect place. Occassionally they have live performances from various artists. You can also hold your poetry sessions in the venue. Gypsy's is the perfect "tambayan" for the budding artist. It surely is a place to inspire. They also have Card/Palm Reading, Henna/Permanent Tattoo, and items for sale. Their furniture are made of throw pillows and sofas. The Gypsy Tea Room is located in Level 1, Piazza Sorrento Bldg., Lacson St., Bacolod City

6. Kuppa's Wimpy's Burger, Pesto Pasta, Minestrone Soup- Their Wimpy's Burger is the perfect burger with cheese and mushroom sauce. Such a wonderful delight! A perfect view of St. John's Institute.

Wimpy's Burger

7. Nene's Spareribs, Burger Steak, Sisig- located across USLS-IS, it brings back memories of my childhood years. With a budget suited perfectly for the budding student, it would be perfectly alright to buy two heaping servings.

8. Pendy's Corned Beef Saucer and Pendy's de luxe Sandwich- Everyone has a certain place that will remind them of their childhood. For me, it's Pendy's. It brings back memories of my younger years when my mom was still alive. Pendy's is an old time favorite of my family. My mom was their number 1 customer. I will never forget the goodness of their tasteful delights...

Pendy's De Luxe
9. Bar 21's Batchoy and Crispy Crablets- I enjoy eating in restaurants that will remind me of my past. Bar 21 is another favorite of my family. It has been a witness of my life. Since I was a young girl dining in the restaurant after my class in Christian Academy of Bacolod, when I partied with my friends at age 13, and until I sat outside Cafe Bob's Lacson and tried to sketch the newly renovated Bar 21 at age 20. It's something I would definitely look forward going home to.

21 Restaurant's Kare-Kare

10. L'sea's Beef Brisket and Shrimp Rolls- Chinese cuisine at its best. Affordable too!
L'sea Shrimp Balls

11. Calea's Cream Puff- Anyone knows how famous Calea cakes are. Even people from Manila have heard of Calea. Do try their cream puff for a change.

Calea's Cream Puff

(L-R) Triple Chocolate Mousse, Ice Cream Cake, Chocolate Cake
12. Bascon Cafe's Bubba Cake- Another delicious delicacy. Bascon Cafe also offers a wide range of food plus its homey atmosphere. Perfect for laid back attitudes of the Bacolodnon.

Babba Cake, Black Sambo, Decadent Cake by Bascon Cafe
13. Vienna Kaffehaus' Sausages and Blackout Cake- Definitely try the cake guys. It's like nothing you've ever tasted before. It's my favorite cake by the way. And sadly, I haven't had a taste of this wonder in years. Will somebody in Bacolod please send me a whole cake? I'll refund the expenses, I swear!

That completes my list. If you've got anything to add, feel free to do so using the reply form below.
